Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie was born on July 26, 2000 in Wellington, New Zealand. She was born to an actress named Miranda Harcourt and a director named Stuart McKenzie. She went to Samuel Marsden Collegiate School and she ended up graduating in 2018.

Thomasin's most famous role in her young career was in Leave No Trace. The film is about an Iraq war veteran played by Ben Foster and his little girl who lives off the grid in a huge state park in Oregon. McKenzie was just seventeen and still in school when the taping started in Oregon. The thirty-day shoot included an extreme training camp. They had a fourteen-day practice period in which they invested a ton of energy with survivalists in the Oregon timberland. They had classes on figuring out how to make fires, figuring out how to stroll through the woodland, going obscure and not upsetting nature, not upsetting the plants and nature.
