In February 2019, KPIX journalist Joe Vazquez and videographer John Anglin were covering teacher protests in Oakland, CA when they were assaulted, robbed, and shot at but were able to get away from the situation safely. That wasn't the situation for their security watch Matt Meredith, a resigned law implementation official recruited by the station, who was shot in the leg.

The team had their camera gear taken at gunpoint. One of the spectators started shooting, harming the security guard and prompting a shootout and consequent police pursue.

“John abandoned the camera, took cover inside the news van where I was, and told me to get down. We heard a flurry of loud gunshots. Very close! More shots, I saw a guy drag the camera away and saw our guard Matt was hit. Quickly called 9-1-1,” Vazquez explained on Twitter about their dangerous experience.

Police found and captured two suspects, who were accused of a few lawful offenses including two counts of second-degree theft.
