Joshua Lucas Easy Dent Maurer was born on June 20, 1971, in Little Rock, AR. He is the child of Don Maurer and Michele LeFevre. His father worked as an emergency physician while his mom worked as a maternity specialist. Lucas' brother, Devin Maurer is a film editorial manager and producer. Josh's sister, Kate works as a gynecologist.

Lucas started to date Hillary Rowland after they met at Sundance in 2008. Josh was engaged with a relationship with actress, Rachel McAdams for a couple of months in 2009. One of Lucas' first feature roles was playing Jace "Streak" Dillon in the realistic PC pilot test program Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger. Lucas picked up some more fame after his roles in Sweet Home Alabama and A Beautiful Mind. He got a big chance he was asked to play Glenn Talbot in Hulk. He later picked up accomplishments in driving roles in motion pictures, like Glory Road, Poseidon, and Stealth. In Glory Road, he featured as basketball coach Don Haskins, a role for which he increased his weight to match the character.
His next project was Boaz Yakin's Death in Love. Peacock is another film where he featured. Lucas featured in the 2009 Ridley Scott-produced Tell-Tale, a film based on the short story "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe.
In January 2020, it was announced that the film, Ford v Ferrari was added to the Oscar nominations list for the Best Picture category. Lucas has a supporting role in the film as Leo Beebe.
