Background

When Steve was still a young boy, his family moved to Cleveland, where he graduated from Glenville High School in 1974. He returned to his home state and went West Virginia University for his college studies. In the wake of completing his college education, Harvey spent his mid-20s working various jobs including insurance sales rep, mailman while he searched for his passion.
Career
Harvey eventually discovered his true calling on the stage, performing stand-up comedy without any prior experience in 1985. After making his name in the comedy world, he finally got his big break in 1996 when he got his own sitcom, The Steve Harvey Show, on the new WB channel. Harvey partnered with another comic named Cedric the Entertainer, who played Harvey's closest companion on the show and would later go along with him on a national comedy tour.
On that tour called The Kings of Comedy, Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer joined Bernie Mac and D.L. Hughley on a four-man show that turned into an unexpected national hit. In 1999, The Kings of Comedy turned into the most successful tour in the United States, rounding up more than $19 million in ticket sales.
Harvey and his three sidekicks ended up as nationally famous people, a status increased by the arrival of Spike Lee's 2000 documentary, The Original Kings of Comedy, which caught the highlights of a two-night show in North Carolina before an enthusiastic gathering of fans. Fans who saw the show on screen felt a similar way. The film, which cost just $3 million to make, eventually earned more than $38 million in the cinematic box office.
