She studied at Alta High School and later on went to the University of North Carolina. At the University of North Carolina, Kealia Ohai was a four-year starter with Tar Heels from 2010 to 2013. Having been a part of the 2012 title winning group, she was named the competition's most remarkable player. Following her first year, she was named to First-Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and All-Atlantic Coast Conference All-Freshman Team.
