Background
Janelle Monáe Robinson was born on December 1, 1985, in Kansas City, Kansas. Her mom was a janitor and her father was a garbage truck driver who battled with chronic drug use all through Monáe's adolescence. Monáe's tough foundation and early comprehension of the dangers of illicit drug use increased her exceptional drive to succeed.
After graduating from F.L. Schlagle High School in Kansas City, Monáe got a grant to study at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, where she stood out in her group. Monáe dropped out of the Academy since she felt inventively smothered. She felt playing a character put restrictions on her creative expression.
Career
After dropping out of school, Monáe moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she lived in a motel with five other ladies and accepted a position working at an Office Depot retail store. She self-produced a demo CD entitled Janelle Monáe: The Audition and steadily visited neighborhood schools to perform and advance her music. It was on one such visit that Monáe met two similar youthful songwriters, Chuck Lightning and Nate Wonder. The threesome established the Wondaland Arts Society, a record name and artists' group to advance creative music and art.
Monáe's huge break came in 2005, at 20 years old, when she performed Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song" at an open mic night. Big Boi, one half of the well-known hip-hop duo OutKast, was in the gathering of people and was completely inspired with Monáe's performance. He featured Monáe on two tracks, "Time Will Reveal" and "Lettin' Go," from the Purple Ribbon All-Stars' album Got Purp? Vol. II. In 2006, OutKast featured Monáe on two additional tunes, "Call the Law" and "In Your Dreams," from its well-known and acclaimed album collection Idlewild. Janelle was able to launch her career off being a talented singer and well liked amount her genre’s leaders.

Monáe tended to the longstanding bits of gossip about her sexuality in an interview with Rolling Stone. She said that she believes herself to be pansexual, attracted all people regardless of their sexual identity.
She was proud to express her preference to Rolling Stone, “Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women, I consider myself to be free.”
