Background
Doris Day was born on April 3, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She studied ballet and tap dancing growing up as a little girl. She even won a local dance competition with her partner Jerry Doherty in her initial teenage years. Her fantasies of dancing on the pro stage were broken alongside her leg in a 1937 auto crash. The girl of a music educator, Day started taking voice exercises during her physical rehab. Ella Fitzgerald was one of her initial motivations as she built up her own vocal style.
Career
In 1948, Day made her film debut in the melodic Romance on the High Seas. She had been contracted to supplant actress Betty Hutton, who needed to drop out of the production. For the film, Day recorded "It's Magic," which demonstrated to be another hit for the youthful performer. While later in her career she turned into the ruler of the rom-com genre, Day demonstrated some ability for progressively dramatic roles. She played a singer working with an agitated musician, Kirk Douglas in Young Man with a Horn (1950). That same year, Day played a lady married to a Ku Klux Klan member in the spine chiller Storm Warning. Later she played a fictionalized form of jazz singer Ruth Etting in Love Me or Leave Me (1955) with James Cagney.
One of her greatest hits originated from motion pictures she made in the mid-1950s. She sang "Mystery Love" in the melodic western Calamity Jane (1953), in which she played a cowgirl.
Personal Life
Relationships
While a significant number of her characters may have wound up with happy romances, Day has never appeared find true love in her personal life. Her first marriage, to musician Al Jorden, ended quickly. The couple had one kid together, a child named Terry, before separating following two years. Her relationship with George Weidler kept going for just a brief time before the pair split.
In 1951, Day went on to marry Martin Melcher, who additionally filled in as her manager. They remained together until his death in 1968. After his death, Day found that her third spouse had lost the vast majority of her cash in awful ventures with an immoral attorney. Day then went on to a new marriage with Barry Comden in 1976. The couple separated in 1981, after five years of an up and down marriage.
