José Antonio Domínguez Banderas was born on August 10, 1960, in Málaga, Spain. After an injured foot finished his initial fantasies about turning into a soccer star, Banderas started studying drama. Subsequent to appearing in productions around Málaga, in 1979, Banderas moved to Madrid to pursue his acting career, eventually procuring himself a spot with the National Theater of Spain.

Alongside his work in film, Banderas got a Tony Award for Best Actor for his performance in the Broadway musical Nine. He also directed the movies Crazy in Alabama (1999) and Summer Rain (2006).
