Norman Gene Macdonald was born on October 17, 1959 in Quebec City, Canada. He was born to Percy and Fern Macdonald. Both of his folks were educators. His father served in the Canadian Army in the Second World War.

Norm Macdonald and his ex wife, Connie Vaillancourt parted ways following eight years of marriage in 1996. They had a son named Dylan who was born in 1993. He was romantically associated with model Elle MacPherson in 1997 but they separated in 1998.

Norm Macdonald's career in comedy took off when he started to do stand-up comedy in clubs with sets that were influenced by Bob Hope and Bob Newhart. He reached a career high when he joined the cast of NBC's Saturday Night Live in 1993. He became a writer and performer for the popular sketch show.

Norm MacDonald made his mark as a leading actor in 1998 when he appeared in the film Dirty Work. The same year, he additionally played the character of Lucky the Dog in Eddy Murphy's Dr. Dolittle. He worked with the ABC Network sitcom The Norm Show from 1999 to 2001 where he played Norm Henderson a former National Hockey League Player.
Norm won $500,000 in the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire for Paul Newman's Charity Camp in the year 2000. He was the voice of Norm the Genie in The Fairly of Odd Parents. He played Buster the Fox in Christmas is Here Again in 2007. In 2010, he appeared on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien which was his first appearance on a talk show for a long time.
In January 2020, it was announced that the film, Klaus was added to the Oscar nominations list for the Best Animated Feature category. Norm has a supporting role in the film as the voice of Mogens.
