Michael Kirk Douglas was born on September 25, 1944, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was born to actor Kirk Douglas and his significant other, Diana Dill. Michael grew up with three brothers named Joel, Peter, and Eric. As the child of a celebrated actor, Michael Douglas grew up with a stressed relationship with his father, which grew more as he progressed through life. He studied drama at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and in New York at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater and the American Place Theater.

Douglas handled his first leading man role in Romancing the Stone (1984), depicting Jack Colton, an Indiana Jones-type swashbuckler.
