Jonathan Edward Bernthal was born on September 20, 1976 in Washington, D.C. His folks are Joan Lurie and Eric Lawrence Bernthal. His brother, Nicholas Bernthal is an orthopedic specialist and professor at UCLA. His other brother, Thomas Bernthal was a former producer at NBC News. Jon went to Sidwell Friends School, where he graduated in 1995 and then proceeded to Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. He decided to drop out of Skidmore so that he could attend the Moscow Art Theater in Russia. While in Russia, he was found by an official director at Harvard, who was responsible for Harvard University's Institute for Advanced Theater Training. Through his assistance, he returned back to America and finished his examinations at the American Repertory Theater in Massachusetts.

Jon is married to a woman named Erin Angle. Erin earns her living as a nurse. She is also the niece of the hall of fame professional wrestler, Kurt Angle. Their loving relationship transformed into marriage in September 2010. Jon turned into a father for the first time in August 2011. The couple together has three children in total together. Jon started his professional acting career with the performance center organization, Fovea Floods. Jon acted in more than 30 plays locally and Off-Broadway. He made his screen debut with a guest role in the TV drama, Boston Legal. He made his big-screen debut playing Manny in Mary/Mary in 2002. His performance as Donnie Pitron in Bar Starz (2008) was valued by the crowd and he started getting greater roles in motion pictures and TV films.

Jon booked his first regular role on a TV series with the sitcom The Class (2006-2007). He finished 12 episodes playing Raymond Gardener in Eastwick (2009-2010). Jon became a big name when played Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead (2010-2012) for which he won Scream Award for Breakout Performance Male in 2011. Jon's biggest role as a leading man came when he was asked to play The Punisher for Netflix.

In January 2020, it was announced that the film Ford v Ferrari was added to the Oscar nominations list for the Best Picture category. Jon has a starring role in the film as Lee Iacocca.
