Caitríona Balfe was born on October 4, 1979 in Dublin, Ireland. While studying drama at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama in 1999, Balfe was offered work as a fashion model in Paris. She was featured both in promoting efforts and on runways for brands like Dolce and Gabbana and Max Mara. She appeared in the 2002 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and on the front of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and ELLE magazines. She then decided to become an actress.

In January 2020, it was announced that the film, Ford v Ferrari was included in the Oscar nominations list for the Best Picture category. Balfe has a starring role in the film as Mollie Miles.
