Jeremy John Irons was born on September 19, 1948 in Cowes, United Kingdom. Irons was born as the child of Paul Dugan Irons, a bookkeeper, and Barbara Anne Brereton Brymer. Irons has a brother, Christopher and a sister, Felicity Anne. He was taught at the free Sherborne School in Dorset from 1962 to 1966. He was the drummer and harmonica player in a four-man school band called the Four Pillars of Wisdom.

Irons prepared as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School and later became the leader of its fundraising.
