Fame

Background and Education

George Strait was born on May 18, 1952, in Poteet, Texas. He was raised on a family owned homestead in Pearsall, Texas. He attended college in his home state and studied farming at Southwest Texas State University. Strait eloped with his high school love, Norma, before joining the military. While positioned at a base in Hawaii, he started singing in the Army-supported band called Rambling Country.

Career

Following a number of failed attempts at a record contract, Strait finally signed a music contract with MCA Records in 1981. Highlighting the hit single "Loosened up," his first album collection, Strait Country (1981), was a huge factor in expanding the radio play reach of less popular music like country and blue grass music.

Strait proceeded to deliver a series of No. 1 album collections through the span of the following decade, including Strait From the Heart (1982), Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind (1984), Something Special (1985), Ocean Front Property (1987) and Beyond the Blue Neon (1989), which were all certified platinum or multi-platinum. In 1989, Strait was named the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year, an accomplishment he repeated in 1990.

In 1992, Strait made his movie acting debut in the film Pure Country, and recorded a huge number of hit melodies for the film's soundtrack , "I Cross My Heart," "Heartland," "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "The King of Broken Hearts." There was no better country looking figure to cast than Strait.

Personal Life

Relationships

George Strait is one happily married man. Strait has dedicated himself to his multi decade long marriage to his better half, Norma. Strait and Norma went to high school together in Pearsall, Texas, southwest of San Antonio.

In an interview with country radio station the Bull 100.3, Strait called his better half "The first girl I ever loved. We knew each other forever, growing up in a small town. I never really even thought anything about her, but then one day I asked her out and we went on a date. We didn't see each other for a long time after that. Then one day, I thought, 'I'm missing the boat here,' and we started dating again." They started a family with the birth of their little girl, Jenifer, on Oct. 6, 1972.
