Alan Alda is known as an American director and actor. He is most famous for playing Hawkeye Pierce on the TV show, 'M*A*S*H'.
Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo on January 28, 1936, in New York City. He is the child of actor Robert Alda, and his first acting encounters were through his father. His youth was more of a drama than a comedy. His mom was mentally unsteady and he endured an episode of polio as a youngster. Alda started out acting in an auditorium in Pennsylvania when he was 16 years old. While a student at New York's Fordham University, he invested some time and energy studying abroad. In 1959, he made his Broadway debut in Only in America.

A Career as an American Actor
Alda made his film debut in the film adaptation of Purlie Victorious, which was called Gone Are the Days (1963). Alda got his biggest break and rose to fame in the TV series M*A*S*H. Alda played the sarcastic, yet gracious Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce, also called "Hawkeye." Set during the Korea War, the series followed the misfortunes of the staff of a military medical unit.
Going on for over 10 years, M*A*S*H allowed Alda the chance to investigate his full scope of artistic acting abilities. He also directed and wrote a few episodes. Alda earned numerous distinctions and awards for his work on M*A*S*H, including in excess of 20 Emmy Award nominations. While on M*A*S*H, Alda discovered time to pursue different projects.
