Whoopi Goldberg was born as Caryn Elaine Johnson on November 13, 1955, in New York City. Goldberg and her older brother, Clyde, were raised by their mom, Emma, in a poor housing project in the Chelsea region of Manhattan. She holds a Ph.D. in writing from New York University. She additionally has a privileged degree from Wilson College.

In 1973, Goldberg married her former medication counselor, Alvin Martin. The couple had one little girl, Alexandrea but they separated in 1979.
