Shayanna met Aaron Hernandez when they were both children in primary school. They became good companions in middle school and eventually started dating in high school. The couple invited their little girl, Avielle to the world in 2012. They became engaged soon thereafter.

Aaron was a star NFL player for the New England Patriots. His career came to an end when Aaron was sent to jail for killing his future brother in law. In 2017, he was found dead in his prison cell from suicide and note he left behind calling Shayanna his "perfect partner". After his demise, scientists at Boston University determined that Aaron had extreme brain damage because of the damage he took during his football career.

In interviews about her deceased fiance, Shayanna cried as she said she still thinks Hernandez was honest about the three homicides he was blamed for. Hernandez had been ruled not guilty in the killings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado and he was engaged in fighting his conviction for the homicide of Odin Lloyd when he executed himself in his Massachusetts jail cell.

"It’s not shameful and I don’t think anybody should feel shameful on who they are inside regardless of who they love. I think it’s a beautiful thing. I just wish I was able to tell him that."
