Samuel G. Arnold was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to the Netherlands from 1881 to 1885. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island on April 15, 1835, to parents Samuel and Mary Arnold. He attended Brown University, graduating in 1855, and then went on to study law at Harvard Law School, graduating in 1858.
Early Career
After graduating from Harvard, Arnold returned to Rhode Island and was admitted to the bar in 1859. He began practicing law in Providence and quickly established himself as a successful lawyer. He was also active in politics, serving as a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1861 to 1862. In 1862, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served until 1867. During his time in Congress, he was a strong advocate for civil rights and was a vocal opponent of slavery.
Ambassadorship
In 1881, President Chester A. Arthur appointed Arnold as the United States Ambassador to the Netherlands. He served in this role until 1885, when he resigned due to ill health. During his tenure, he was instrumental in negotiating a treaty between the United States and the Netherlands that allowed for the extradition of criminals between the two countries. He also worked to improve diplomatic relations between the two countries and was a strong advocate for the rights of American citizens living in the Netherlands.
Later Life
After resigning from his ambassadorship, Arnold returned to Rhode Island and resumed his law practice. He also served as a trustee of Brown University and was a member of the Rhode Island Historical Society. He died in Providence on April 15, 1895, at the age of 60.
