Tom Clancy (April 12, 1947 – October 1, 2013) was an American author best known for his military-themed techno-thriller novels. He was a part of the New York Times bestseller list for over two decades and sold over 100 million copies of his books.

Early Life

Tom Clancy was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Thomas Clancy Sr. and Catherine Clancy. He was the second of four children and was raised in a Catholic household. He attended Loyola Blakefield high school and graduated in 1965. He then attended Loyola College in Baltimore, where he earned a degree in English literature in 1969.

Career

Clancy began his career as an insurance salesman and later worked as an associate editor for the small-town newspaper, the Maryland Coast Dispatch. In 1984, he wrote his first novel, The Hunt for Red October, which was published by the Naval Institute Press. The novel was a success and was later adapted into a movie starring Sean Connery.

Clancy went on to write several more novels, including Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears. His books often featured the fictional character Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst and former Marine Corps officer. His books were often praised for their accurate depictions of military and intelligence operations.

Clancy also wrote several non-fiction books, including Submarine: A Guided Tour Inside a Nuclear Warship and Armored Cav: A Guided Tour of an Armored Cavalry Regiment. He also wrote several video games, including the popular Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six series.

Legacy

Clancy's books have been translated into over two dozen languages and have sold over 100 million copies worldwide. He was the recipient of several awards, including the Raymond Chandler Award for Lifetime Achievement in Writing and the Edgar Award for Best Novel.

Clancy's books have been adapted into several movies and video games, including the popular Jack Ryan series starring Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. His books have also been adapted into television series, including the Amazon Prime series Jack Ryan.
