Career
After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Harris began her career in public service. She worked as a social worker in the Philadelphia Department of Public Welfare from 1969 to 1972. She then moved to Washington, D.C., where she served as a legislative assistant to Senator Harrison A. Williams from 1972 to 1975.
In 1975, Harris joined the Carter Administration as the Deputy Director of ACTION, the federal volunteer agency. She then served as the Deputy Director of the Office of Personnel Management from 1977 to 1979.
In 1979, Harris left the public sector and joined the private sector. She worked as a senior executive at the Xerox Corporation from 1979 to 1983. She then joined the law firm of Hogan & Hartson, where she served as a partner from 1983 to 1989.
In 1989, Harris returned to public service when she was appointed as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services by President George H.W. Bush. She served in this role until 1993.
Philanthropy
In addition to her work in the public and private sectors, Harris is also an active philanthropist. She is the founder and chair of the Patricia Harris Foundation, which provides grants to organizations that promote education, health, and economic development.
