Early Life

Jonathan Capehart was born on August 13, 1968 in Newark, New Jersey. He is an American journalist, author, and political commentator. He is currently a member of the editorial board of The Washington Post and a contributor to MSNBC. He is also the host of the podcast Cape Up.

Capehart grew up in a working-class family in Newark. His father was a truck driver and his mother was a homemaker. He attended Seton Hall University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science. After college, he worked as a legislative aide in the New Jersey State Senate.

Career

In 1995, Capehart began his career in journalism as a reporter for The Star-Ledger in Newark. He then moved to The Wall Street Journal, where he worked as a reporter and editor for more than a decade. During his time at the Journal, he covered a wide range of topics, including politics, business, and culture.

In 2007, Capehart joined the editorial board of The Washington Post. He has written extensively on politics, race, and culture for the Post. He is also a frequent guest on MSNBC, where he provides commentary on current events.

In 2018, Capehart launched his podcast, Cape Up. The podcast features interviews with prominent figures in politics, media, and culture. Guests have included former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and former Attorney General Eric Holder.

In addition to his work in journalism, Capehart is also an author. In 2020, he published his first book, We Can Do Better: Ideas to Rebuild a Broken America. The book is a collection of essays on the state of American politics and society.
