Early Life
Marv Albert was born Marvin Philip Aufrichtig on June 12, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Max, was a sportswriter for the New York Post, and his mother, Sarah, was a homemaker. Albert grew up in a Jewish household and attended New York University, where he earned a degree in radio and television.
Career
Albert began his career in broadcasting in the early 1960s, working as a news reporter for WCBS-TV in New York. He then moved to the sports department, where he covered the New York Knicks and the New York Mets. In 1967, he was hired by the Knicks to be their play-by-play announcer, a role he would hold for the next 25 years.
In the late 1970s, Albert began to gain national recognition for his work on the NBA on NBC, where he served as the lead play-by-play announcer for the network's coverage of the NBA Finals. He also worked on the YES Network, where he called New York Yankees games, and on TNT, where he called NBA games.
Albert has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including being inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998. He was also named the National Sportscaster of the Year in 1992 and 1993.
