Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, and science communicator. He is the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space in New York City. Tyson is known for his popular science books and for his work on the television series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, an update of Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.

Early Life

Neil deGrasse Tyson was born on October 5, 1958 in New York City. He was raised in the Bronx and attended the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson was inspired by Carl Sagan, who was a professor at Cornell University. Tyson went on to attend Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in physics in 1980. He then went on to earn a master's degree in astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin in 1983 and a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Columbia University in 1991.

Career

Tyson began his career as a research associate at Princeton University in 1991. He then went on to become a staff scientist at the Hayden Planetarium in 1994. In 1996, he became the director of the planetarium, a position he still holds today. Tyson has also served as a visiting research scientist at the University of Maryland and a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Tyson is well known for his popular science books, including Death by Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries, The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet, and Astrophysics for People in a Hurry. He has also written several children's books, including Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier and Welcome to the Universe: An Astrophysical Tour.

Tyson is also well known for his work on the television series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, an update of Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. He has also appeared on numerous television shows, including The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and The Big Bang Theory.
