Ralph J. Roberts (1920-2015) was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded Comcast Corporation, one of the world's largest media and entertainment companies. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was the son of a Jewish immigrant from Russia. Roberts attended the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, where he earned a degree in economics.

Early Career

After graduating from college, Roberts began his career in the retail industry, working for a Philadelphia-based department store. He eventually became the store's general manager, and in 1963, he purchased the store from its owner. Roberts then sold the store and used the proceeds to purchase a small cable television company in Tupelo, Mississippi. This marked the beginning of his career in the cable television industry.

Founding of Comcast

In 1969, Roberts founded Comcast Corporation, which he ran as chairman and CEO until 2002. Under his leadership, Comcast grew from a small cable television company to one of the world's largest media and entertainment companies. Roberts was known for his innovative approach to business, and he was credited with pioneering the concept of bundling cable television, telephone, and internet services.

Philanthropy

Throughout his life, Roberts was an active philanthropist. He and his wife, Suzanne, established the Roberts Family Foundation, which supports a variety of causes, including education, health care, and the arts.
