Jim DeMint is an American politician and former United States Senator from South Carolina. He served in the Senate from 2005 to 2013 and was a member of the Republican Party. He was also the chairman of the Senate Steering Committee and the Senate Conservative Fund.
Early Life
Jim DeMint was born on September 2, 1951 in Greenville, South Carolina. He attended the University of Tennessee, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1974. He then went on to earn a master's degree in business from Clemson University in 1977.
Political Career
DeMint began his political career in 1992 when he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. He served in the House until 1998, when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He served in the House until 2005, when he was elected to the United States Senate.
In the Senate, DeMint was a strong advocate for fiscal responsibility and limited government. He was a vocal opponent of the Affordable Care Act and was a leader in the effort to repeal it. He was also a strong supporter of the Tea Party movement and was a leader in the effort to defund Planned Parenthood.
DeMint was also a strong advocate for religious freedom and was a leader in the effort to pass the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. He was also a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and was a leader in the effort to pass the National Right to Carry Reciprocity Act.
In 2012, DeMint announced that he would not seek re-election to the Senate and instead would become the president of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. He served in this role until 2017, when he stepped down to become a senior advisor to the Senate Conservatives Fund.
