Mitt Romney is an American politician and businessman who served as the 70th Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007 and was the Republican Party's nominee for President of the United States in the 2012 election. He is the son of former Michigan Governor George Romney and Lenore Romney.
Early Life
Mitt Romney was born on March 12, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. He was raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and attended public schools in the area. He graduated from Cranbrook School in 1965 and went on to attend Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1971. He then attended Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School, earning a joint JD/MBA degree in 1975.
Business Career
After graduating from Harvard, Romney began his career in business. He joined the Boston Consulting Group in 1977 and then moved to Bain & Company in 1978. In 1984, he co-founded Bain Capital, a private equity investment firm. He served as the firm's CEO until 1999, when he left to pursue a career in politics.
Political Career
In 1994, Romney ran for the United States Senate against incumbent Ted Kennedy. He lost the election, but his campaign gained national attention and helped to establish him as a rising star in the Republican Party. In 2002, he ran for Governor of Massachusetts and won. He served as Governor from 2003 to 2007 and was widely praised for his fiscal policies and his ability to work with both parties.
In 2008, Romney ran for the Republican nomination for President of the United States. He lost the nomination to John McCain, but his campaign helped to establish him as a leading voice in the Republican Party. In 2012, he ran again for the Republican nomination and won. He went on to face incumbent President Barack Obama in the general election, but ultimately lost.
Post-Political Career
After his defeat in the 2012 election, Romney returned to the private sector. He joined the board of directors of Marriott International and became a partner at Solamere Capital, a private equity firm. He also became a senior advisor at the private equity firm Bain Capital.
In 2018, Romney was elected to the United States Senate, representing the state of Utah. He is currently serving his first term in the Senate and is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
