Herbert Brownell Jr. was an American lawyer and politician who served as the United States Attorney General from 1953 to 1957. He was a key figure in the Eisenhower administration and was instrumental in the desegregation of public schools in the United States.
Early Life and Education
Herbert Brownell Jr. was born on April 12, 1904 in Nemaha County, Nebraska. He was the son of Herbert Brownell Sr., a lawyer, and his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Griswold. He attended the University of Nebraska, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1925. He then attended Yale Law School, where he earned his law degree in 1928.
Political Career
After graduating from law school, Brownell began his political career as a Republican. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1932 and served until 1938. He then served as the Republican National Committeeman from New York from 1940 to 1944. In 1944, he was appointed as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
In 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Brownell as the United States Attorney General. As Attorney General, Brownell was instrumental in the desegregation of public schools in the United States. He also worked to strengthen the civil rights division of the Department of Justice and to enforce the civil rights laws that had been passed by Congress.
In 1956, Brownell resigned as Attorney General and returned to private practice. He continued to be active in politics, serving as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1960 and 1964. He also served as a member of the President's Commission on Civil Rights from 1961 to 1964.
Later Life and Legacy
In his later years, Brownell served as a trustee of the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships and the Eisenhower Institute. He also served as a member of the board of directors of the American Bar Association.
Herbert Brownell Jr. died on May 1, 1996 at the age of 92. He was remembered as a key figure in the Eisenhower administration and for his role in the desegregation of public schools in the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.
