George Greer was an American politician and lawyer who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1891 to 1895. He was born in 1845 in New York City to a prominent family. His father, William Greer, was a successful lawyer and his mother, Mary Greer, was a homemaker.

Early Life

George Greer was born in 1845 in New York City. He attended the prestigious Columbia College, where he graduated with a degree in law in 1867. After graduating, he began practicing law in New York City. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled lawyer and was soon appointed to the New York Supreme Court.

Political Career

In 1891, Greer was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He served in this position until 1895. During his time in Congress, he was a strong advocate for civil rights and was a vocal opponent of the Jim Crow laws. He also supported the establishment of a national currency and the creation of a federal income tax.

Later Life

After leaving Congress, Greer returned to his law practice in New York City. He continued to be an active member of the Democratic Party and was a delegate to the 1896 Democratic National Convention. He also served as a member of the New York State Assembly from 1897 to 1898.


George Greer died in 1902 at the age of 57. He was buried in the Greer family plot in New York City. He was remembered as a dedicated public servant who fought for civil rights and economic justice. His legacy lives on in the many laws and policies he helped to shape during his time in Congress.
