Shay Healy is an Irish singer-songwriter, broadcaster, and producer. He is best known for his 1980 hit single, “What’s Another Year”, which won the Eurovision Song Contest for Ireland. He has since gone on to have a successful career in the music industry, as well as in broadcasting and producing.

Early Life

Shay Healy was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1950. He was raised in a musical family, with his father being a professional musician. Healy began playing the guitar at the age of nine and soon began writing his own songs. He attended University College Dublin, where he studied English and Philosophy.

Music Career

Healy’s music career began in the early 1970s when he formed the band, The Drifters. The band released two albums, “The Drifters” and “The Drifters II”, before disbanding in 1975. Healy then began a solo career, releasing his debut album, “Shay Healy”, in 1977. He went on to release several more albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including “The Best of Shay Healy” and “The Collection”.

Eurovision Success

In 1980, Healy entered the Eurovision Song Contest with his song, “What’s Another Year”. The song went on to win the contest, making Healy the first Irish artist to do so. The song was a huge success in Ireland and the UK, reaching number one in both countries. Healy went on to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest again in 1982, with the song “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow”.

Broadcasting and Producing

In addition to his music career, Healy has also had a successful career in broadcasting and producing. He has presented several radio and television shows, including “The Late Late Show” and “The Afternoon Show”.
