Ken Medema is an American singer-songwriter, composer, and pianist. He is best known for his unique style of improvisational music, which combines elements of jazz, folk, and gospel. He has released over 20 albums and has performed in over 40 countries.

Early Life

Ken Medema was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1945. He was born with a congenital eye disorder that left him blind. Despite this, he was determined to pursue a career in music. He began playing the piano at the age of five and was soon performing in local churches. He attended the Michigan School for the Blind, where he studied music theory and composition.

Career

In the 1970s, Medema began to develop his own style of improvisational music. He released his first album, “The Voice of the Wind”, in 1975. The album was a critical success and established Medema as a unique and innovative artist. He went on to release several more albums, including “The Journey” (1977), “The Gift” (1980), and “The Vision” (1984).

In the 1980s, Medema began to tour extensively, performing in over 40 countries. He has performed at numerous festivals, including the Newport Folk Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the Winnipeg Folk Festival. He has also performed at the White House for President Bill Clinton.

In addition to his solo work, Medema has collaborated with a variety of artists, including Bruce Cockburn, Judy Collins, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He has also composed music for films, television shows, and theater productions.

Legacy

Ken Medema is widely regarded as one of the most influential and innovative singer-songwriters of his generation. His unique style of improvisational music has been praised by critics and fans alike. He has been honored with numerous awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers Lifetime Achievement Award.

Medema continues to perform and record music. He has released several albums in recent years, including “The Road Home” (2009) and “The River” (2013). He is also an active member of the National Federation of the Blind and has served as a mentor to many blind musicians.
