Clemente Mastella (born April 8, 1951) is an Italian politician who served as Minister of Justice in the Prodi II Cabinet from 2006 to 2008. He is a member of the Union of the Centre (UdC) party and was the mayor of Benevento from 2004 to 2008.
Early Life
Clemente Mastella was born in Benevento, Italy on April 8, 1951. He studied law at the University of Naples Federico II and graduated in 1975. After graduating, he worked as a lawyer in Benevento.
Political Career
In 1983, Mastella joined the Christian Democracy party and was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in 1987. He was re-elected in 1992 and 1996. In 2001, he joined the Union of the Centre (UdC) party and was elected to the Italian Senate in 2001.
In 2004, Mastella was elected mayor of Benevento and served until 2008. In 2006, he was appointed Minister of Justice in the Prodi II Cabinet. During his tenure, he was responsible for introducing a number of reforms to the Italian justice system, including the introduction of plea bargaining and the reform of the Italian penal code.
In 2008, Mastella resigned from his post as Minister of Justice after being implicated in a corruption scandal. He was later acquitted of all charges.
In 2013, Mastella was elected to the European Parliament and served until 2019. During his tenure, he was a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and the Special Committee on Tax Rulings and Other Measures Similar in Nature or Effect.
Later Life
In 2019, Mastella was re-elected to the Italian Senate. He is currently a member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs and the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Mastella is married to former Italian Minister of Justice, Emma Bonino. They have two children.
