Wolfgang Schäuble is a German politician who has served as the Minister of Finance since 2009. He is a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and has been a member of the Bundestag since 1972.

Early Life

Wolfgang Schäuble was born on 18 September 1942 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. He was raised in a Catholic family and attended the University of Freiburg, where he studied law. After graduating in 1967, he worked as a lawyer in Offenburg.

Political Career

In 1972, Schäuble was elected to the Bundestag as a member of the CDU. He quickly rose through the ranks of the party and was appointed Minister of the Interior in 1982. During his tenure, he was responsible for the introduction of the Schengen Agreement, which abolished border controls between European countries.

In 1989, Schäuble was elected as the CDU's chairman, a position he held until 2000. During this time, he was a key figure in the reunification of Germany and the negotiations that led to the Maastricht Treaty.

In 2005, Schäuble was appointed Minister of the Interior and Vice Chancellor in the government of Angela Merkel. He held this position until 2009, when he was appointed Minister of Finance.
