Wendy Carlos (born Walter Carlos, November 14, 1939) is an American composer and electronic musician. She is best known for her pioneering work in electronic music and her Grammy Award-winning soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange.

Early Life

Wendy Carlos was born Walter Carlos in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. She was raised in a conservative Catholic family and attended the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. At the age of 17, she enrolled at Brown University, where she studied physics and music. It was during this time that she began experimenting with electronic music, using a Moog synthesizer.

Career

In 1968, Carlos released her debut album, Switched-On Bach, which featured her interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach's compositions. The album was a critical and commercial success, becoming the first classical album to go platinum and winning three Grammy Awards.

In 1971, Carlos released her second album, The Well-Tempered Synthesizer, which featured her own compositions. The album was also a success, and Carlos became one of the most influential electronic musicians of the time.

In 1972, Carlos composed the soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. The soundtrack was a critical and commercial success, winning a Grammy Award and becoming one of the most iconic soundtracks of all time.

In the 1980s, Carlos released several albums, including Digital Moonscapes, Beauty in the Beast, and Tales of Heaven and Hell. She also composed the soundtrack to the 1982 film Tron.

In the 1990s, Carlos released several more albums, including By Request, Reflections, and Sonic Seasonings. She also composed the soundtrack to the 1995 film Toy Story.

In the 2000s, Carlos released several more albums, including Re-Enchantment, and collaborated with other musicians, including Moby and Aphex Twin.
