Virginia Grey (1917-2004) was an American actress who appeared in over 100 films and television shows during her career. She was best known for her roles in such films as The Women (1939), The Maltese Falcon (1941), and The Big Sleep (1946).
Early Life
Virginia Grey was born on March 22, 1917 in Edendale, California. She was the daughter of a vaudeville performer and a former Ziegfeld Follies dancer. Grey began her acting career at the age of five, appearing in a series of short films. She later attended the Hollywood Professional School, where she studied acting and dance.
Career
Grey made her feature film debut in 1933, appearing in the drama The Silver Streak. She went on to appear in a number of films throughout the 1930s, including The Women (1939), The Maltese Falcon (1941), and The Big Sleep (1946). She also appeared in a number of television shows, including The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, The Twilight Zone, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.
Later Years
In the 1950s, Grey began to focus more on her personal life, marrying actor John Ireland in 1952. The couple had two children, but later divorced in 1959. Grey continued to act sporadically throughout the 1960s and 1970s, appearing in such films as The Great Bank Robbery (1969) and The Cat and the Canary (1979).
Grey's final film role was in the 1981 comedy The Cannonball Run. She retired from acting shortly after and spent her later years living in Palm Springs, California. Grey died on July 31, 2004 at the age of 87.
