Helmut Marko is a former Formula One driver and current advisor to the Red Bull Racing team. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the sport, having been involved in the sport since the 1970s.
Early Life
Helmut Marko was born on April 27, 1943 in Graz, Austria. He was the son of a wealthy industrialist and grew up in a privileged environment. He attended the University of Graz, where he studied law and economics.
Racing Career
Marko began his racing career in 1965, competing in the Austrian Formula Junior Championship. He went on to compete in Formula Two and Formula Three, before making his Formula One debut in 1971. He competed in the sport for four years, driving for BRM, March and Lotus. He achieved a best finish of fourth place at the 1972 Monaco Grand Prix.
Marko retired from racing in 1975, after suffering serious injuries in a crash at the German Grand Prix. He was left with permanent vision damage in his right eye, which ended his racing career.
Red Bull Racing
In 2005, Marko was appointed as an advisor to the Red Bull Racing team. He has since become a key figure in the team's success, helping to develop the team's strategy and driver line-up. He has been credited with helping to bring the team to the forefront of the sport, and has been instrumental in the team's four consecutive Constructors' Championships from 2010 to 2013.
Marko has also been involved in the development of young drivers, helping to bring through the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.
