Early Life
Ross Perot was born on June 27, 1930 in Texarkana, Texas. He was the son of a cotton broker and grew up in a middle-class family. Perot attended Texarkana Junior College and then the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1953. After his graduation, he served in the United States Navy for four years.
Business Career
In 1962, Perot founded Electronic Data Systems (EDS), a data processing and software company. He quickly grew the company into a multi-million dollar business. In 1984, he sold EDS to General Motors for $2.5 billion.
In 1988, Perot founded Perot Systems, a technology services company. He served as the company's chairman until 2000. In 2009, Perot Systems was acquired by Dell for $3.9 billion.
Political Career
In 1992, Perot ran for president as an independent candidate. He received 19% of the popular vote, making him the most successful third-party candidate since Theodore Roosevelt in 1912.
In 1996, Perot ran for president again, this time as the nominee of the Reform Party. He received 8% of the popular vote.
Philanthropy
Perot has been a major philanthropist throughout his life. He has donated millions of dollars to various causes, including education, health care, and veterans' issues. He has also established several foundations, including the Perot Foundation and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science.
