Early Life
Ron Galella was born on October 10, 1931 in the Bronx, New York. He was the son of Italian immigrants, and his father was a tailor. Growing up, Galella was an avid photographer, and he was inspired by the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. He attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, where he studied photography.
Career
After graduating from college, Galella began his career as a freelance photographer. He quickly gained notoriety for his candid shots of celebrities, and he was soon dubbed the “paparazzo”. He was known for his aggressive tactics, and he often followed celebrities around in order to get the perfect shot. He was also known for his willingness to take risks in order to get the shot, and he was often seen scaling walls and fences in order to get the perfect angle.
Galella’s work was featured in numerous publications, including Life, People, and Rolling Stone. He also published several books, including “The Paparazzi” and “The Unauthorized Biography of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis”. He was also the subject of a documentary, “Smash His Camera”, which was released in 2010.
Legacy
Galella’s work has had a lasting impact on the world of photography. His aggressive tactics and willingness to take risks in order to get the perfect shot have become the standard for paparazzi photographers. His work has also been credited with helping to create the modern celebrity culture, as his photos helped to create a public fascination with celebrities.
Galella passed away on October 9, 2020 at the age of 88. He left behind a legacy of iconic photographs that will continue to be admired for years to come.
