Rodney Frelinghuysen is an American politician who served as the U.S. Representative for New Jersey's 11th congressional district from 1995 to 2019. He was a member of the Republican Party and was the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives from New Jersey.

Early Life and Education

Rodney Frelinghuysen was born on April 29, 1946 in New York City to Peter Hood Ballantine Frelinghuysen Jr. and Mary Virginia (née Grew). His father was a U.S. Representative from New Jersey's 5th congressional district from 1953 to 1975. Frelinghuysen attended St. Mark's School in Southborough, Massachusetts and graduated from Hobart College in 1968. He then went on to earn a master's degree in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 1970.

Political Career

Frelinghuysen began his political career in 1982 when he was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly. He served in the Assembly until 1994, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He was re-elected to the House in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016. During his time in Congress, Frelinghuysen served on the House Appropriations Committee and was the chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. He was also a member of the House Financial Services Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Legacy

During his time in Congress, Frelinghuysen was a strong advocate for veterans, military personnel, and their families. He was a vocal supporter of the military and was a leader in securing funding for military construction projects.
