Early Life
Robert Wussler was born in New York City on April 15, 1936. He was the son of a Jewish immigrant family from Austria. His father, Max, was a successful businessman who owned a small clothing store in the Bronx. His mother, Rose, was a homemaker who raised Robert and his two siblings. Growing up, Robert was an avid reader and enjoyed playing sports. He attended the Bronx High School of Science and graduated in 1954.
Career
After graduating from high school, Robert attended the University of Michigan where he earned a degree in business administration. After college, he began his career in the media industry. He started out as a sales representative for CBS in New York City. He quickly rose through the ranks and eventually became the Vice President of Sales for CBS in the late 1960s.
In 1972, Robert was appointed as the President of CBS Sports. During his tenure, he was responsible for the development of the NFL Today pre-game show and the launch of the CBS Sports Network. He also oversaw the broadcast of the first Super Bowl in 1967.
In 1979, Robert left CBS and joined the Turner Broadcasting System (TBS). He was appointed as the President and Chief Operating Officer of the company. During his time at TBS, he was responsible for the launch of CNN, the first 24-hour news network. He also oversaw the launch of the Cartoon Network and the Turner Classic Movies channel.
In 1989, Robert left TBS and joined the Comsat Video Enterprises (CVE). He was appointed as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the company. During his tenure, he was responsible for the launch of the first satellite-delivered pay-per-view service. He also oversaw the launch of the first digital satellite television service.
Later Life
In 1997, Robert retired from CVE and moved to Florida. He continued to be involved in the media industry as a consultant and advisor. He also served on the board of directors for several media companies.
Robert passed away on August 8, 2018 at the age of 82. He was remembered as a pioneer in the media industry who helped shape the way we consume media today. He was also remembered for his philanthropic work, having donated millions of dollars to various charities throughout his life.
