Early Life
Prescott Sheldon Bush was born on May 15, 1895 in Columbus, Ohio. He was the son of Samuel Prescott Bush and Flora Sheldon Bush. His father was a successful businessman and his mother was a homemaker. He had two brothers, Robert and William, and a sister, Mary.
Bush attended St. George's School in Newport, Rhode Island, and then Yale University, where he was a member of the Skull and Bones secret society. After graduating from Yale in 1917, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in France during World War I.
Business Career
After the war, Bush returned to the United States and began working for his father's business, the Buckeye Steel Castings Company. He eventually became the company's president and chairman. In 1924, he married Dorothy Walker, the daughter of George Herbert Walker, a wealthy banker and investor.
In 1931, Bush and his father-in-law founded the investment banking firm of Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. Bush was a partner in the firm until his retirement in 1964. During his time at the firm, he was involved in a number of business deals, including the financing of the Union Banking Corporation, which was used by the Nazis to move money out of Germany.
Political Career
In addition to his business career, Bush was also active in politics. He was a member of the Republican Party and served as a U.S. Senator from Connecticut from 1952 to 1963. He was an advocate for civil rights and was a strong supporter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
In 1964, Bush ran for the Republican nomination for President, but he was defeated by Barry Goldwater. He continued to be active in politics, however, and was a major fundraiser for the Republican Party.
Legacy
Prescott Bush died on October 8, 1972 at the age of 77. He was remembered as a successful businessman and a dedicated public servant. His legacy lives on in his sons, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, who both served as President of the United States.
