Petroc Trelawny is a British broadcaster, journalist, and presenter. He is best known for his work on BBC Radio 3, where he has presented a variety of programmes, including the flagship classical music show, Essential Classics. He is also a regular presenter of the BBC Proms, and has presented the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition since 2018.

Early life

Petroc Trelawny was born in Cornwall, England, in 1971. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a professional musician and his mother a music teacher. From an early age, Petroc was exposed to a wide range of music, from classical to jazz, and developed a passion for music.

He attended Truro School, where he was a member of the school choir and orchestra, and went on to study music at the University of Bristol. After graduating, he worked as a freelance musician, performing with various orchestras and ensembles.

Broadcasting career

In 1998, Petroc began his broadcasting career, joining BBC Radio 3 as a presenter. He has since presented a variety of programmes, including Essential Classics, which he has presented since 2002. He has also presented the BBC Proms since 2004, and has been the regular presenter of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition since 2018.

In addition to his work on BBC Radio 3, Petroc has also presented programmes on BBC Radio 4, including the long-running series, The Reith Lectures. He has also presented a number of television programmes, including the BBC Four series, The Sound of the Sixties.

In 2020, Petroc was appointed as the new presenter of BBC Radio 3's Breakfast Show, taking over from Sara Mohr-Pietsch.

Personal life

Petroc is married to fellow broadcaster, Jo Whiley, and they have two children together. He is a keen runner, and has completed several marathons. He is also a passionate supporter of the Cornwall Air Ambulance, and has been involved in fundraising for the charity.
