Early Life

Peter Max is an American artist and illustrator who is best known for his vibrant psychedelic art. He was born in Berlin, Germany in 1937 and moved to Shanghai, China with his family in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution. His family eventually settled in Brooklyn, New York in 1953. Max was exposed to art from a young age, as his father was an art dealer and his mother was a fashion designer. He attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City and then went on to study at the Art Students League of New York.

Career

Max began his career as a commercial artist, creating illustrations for magazines and newspapers. He also worked as a graphic designer for an advertising agency. In the 1960s, he began to experiment with psychedelic art, which was heavily influenced by the hippie movement of the time. His work was featured in several magazines, including Time, Life, and Esquire.
