Early Life

Edward Mezvinsky was born on August 17, 1937 in Ames, Iowa. He was the son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine. His father, Morris, was a lawyer and his mother, Rose, was a homemaker. Mezvinsky attended the University of Iowa, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1959. He then went on to earn a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962.

Political Career

Mezvinsky began his political career in 1965 when he was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives. He served in the House for four years before being elected to the Iowa Senate in 1969. He served in the Senate until 1973, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served in the House for four terms, from 1973 to 1981. During his time in Congress, Mezvinsky was a strong advocate for civil rights and environmental protection.

Mezvinsky was also a vocal supporter of Israel and was a founding member of the Congressional Israel Leadership Caucus. He was also a strong supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment and was a leader in the effort to pass the amendment in Congress.

In 1981, Mezvinsky was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. He served in this role until 1983.

Later Life

After leaving politics, Mezvinsky became a successful businessman. He founded several companies, including a venture capital firm and a real estate development company. He also served on the board of directors of several companies, including the Philadelphia Stock Exchange.

In 2001, Mezvinsky was indicted on charges of bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud. He was convicted and sentenced to 80 months in prison. He was released in 2008 and has since been living in Pennsylvania.

Mezvinsky is the father of Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He is also the grandfather of two grandchildren.
