Early Life
Paul Kangas was born on April 28, 1940, in Ironwood, Michigan. He was the son of a Finnish immigrant father and a mother of Swedish descent. He attended Ironwood High School, where he was an active member of the school's debate team. After graduating in 1958, he attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a degree in economics.
Career
After college, Paul Kangas began his career as a stockbroker in Detroit. He quickly rose through the ranks and eventually became a partner at the firm. In the late 1970s, he was recruited by the financial news network CNBC to become a financial analyst. He was a regular contributor to the network's nightly show, "Wall Street Week," which aired from 1979 to 2002.
Kangas was known for his calm and measured approach to financial analysis. He was often seen as a voice of reason in the midst of the stock market's volatility. He was also known for his catchphrase, "I'm Paul Kangas, wishing all of you the best of good buys."
Later Life
In 2002, Paul Kangas retired from CNBC and moved to Florida. He continued to be active in the financial world, however, writing a weekly column for the Naples Daily News and appearing as a guest on various financial news programs.
Kangas was also an active philanthropist. He was a major donor to the University of Michigan and was a founding member of the Ironwood Community Foundation. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Naples Children's Museum.
In 2011, Paul Kangas was inducted into the Michigan Business Hall of Fame. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 76.
