Olympia Snowe is an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Maine from 1995 to 2013. She was the first woman in Maine to be elected to both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Snowe was also the first Republican woman to serve in the Senate in the history of the United States.
Early Life and Education
Olympia Snowe was born Olympia Jean Bouchles on February 21, 1947 in Augusta, Maine. She was the daughter of Greek immigrants, George and Georgia Bouchles. Snowe attended the University of Maine, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. She then went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in 1971 from the University of Maine.
Political Career
Snowe began her political career in 1973 when she was elected to the Maine House of Representatives. She served in the Maine House until 1976, when she was elected to the Maine Senate. In 1978, Snowe was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first woman in Maine to be elected to both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate.
In 1994, Snowe was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first Republican woman to serve in the Senate in the history of the United States. During her time in the Senate, Snowe was a moderate Republican and was known for her willingness to work across the aisle. She was a strong advocate for women’s rights and was a key supporter of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009.
Snowe was also a strong advocate for fiscal responsibility and was a key supporter of the Balanced Budget Amendment of 1997. She was also a key supporter of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
Retirement
In 2012, Snowe announced that she would not seek re-election to the Senate. She cited the increasing partisanship in Congress as the reason for her decision. Snowe retired from the Senate in 2013 and was succeeded by Angus King.
Legacy
Olympia Snowe is remembered as a trailblazer for women in politics. She was the first woman in Maine to be elected to both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. She was also the first Republican woman to serve in the Senate in the history of the United States.
