Early Life

Neil Leslie Diamond was born on January 24, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the son of a dry-goods merchant and a homemaker. His parents were of Russian-Jewish descent. Diamond was raised in the Jewish faith and attended Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. He was an excellent student and was accepted to New York University, where he studied psychology.

Musical Career

Diamond began his musical career in the early 1960s, writing songs for a variety of artists. He wrote the song "I'm a Believer" for The Monkees, which became a number one hit. He also wrote songs for other artists such as Elvis Presley, Deep Purple, and The Carpenters. In 1966, Diamond signed with Bang Records and released his first album, The Feel of Neil Diamond. The album was a success and spawned several hit singles, including "Cherry, Cherry" and "Solitary Man".

In the 1970s, Diamond released a string of successful albums, including Hot August Night, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, and Beautiful Noise.
