Early Life
Mike Nugent was born on March 2, 1982 in Centerville, Ohio. He attended Centerville High School, where he was a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and soccer. He was a two-time All-State selection in football and was named the Ohio Division I Player of the Year in 2000. He was also a two-time All-Ohio selection in soccer and was named the Ohio Division I Player of the Year in 2001.
College Career
Nugent attended Ohio State University, where he was a four-year starter at placekicker. He was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and was named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Year in 2004. He also set the school record for most field goals made in a single season with 24. He was also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
NFL Career
Nugent was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with the Jets, making the Pro Bowl in 2006. He then signed with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009 and spent seven seasons with the team. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2011 and was a two-time All-Pro selection. He also set the Bengals franchise record for most field goals made in a single season with 33 in 2011.
In 2016, Nugent signed with the Arizona Cardinals and spent one season with the team. He then signed with the Chicago Bears in 2017 and spent two seasons with the team. He was released by the Bears in 2019 and is currently a free agent.
Legacy
Mike Nugent is one of the most successful placekickers in NFL history. He has been named to the Pro Bowl three times and has been a two-time All-Pro selection. He has also set multiple franchise records, including the Bengals record for most field goals made in a single season.
