Mazie Hirono is an American politician who has served as the junior United States Senator from Hawaii since 2013. She is the first female Senator from Hawaii, the first Asian-American woman elected to the Senate, and the first U.S. Senator of Japanese ancestry.

Early Life

Mazie Keiko Hirono was born on November 3, 1947 in Fukushima, Japan. Her father, Katsuji Hirono, was a civil engineer and her mother, Kumiko, was a homemaker. When she was six years old, her family moved to Hawaii, where she attended public schools and graduated from Kaimuki High School in Honolulu. She then attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and psychology in 1970.

Political Career

In 1980, Hirono was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives, where she served for eight years. In 1994, she was elected to the Hawaii State Senate, where she served for four years. In 2002, she was elected Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii, becoming the first woman to hold the position.

In 2006, Hirono ran for the United States House of Representatives, representing Hawaii's 2nd congressional district. She won the election and served in the House for six years. In 2012, she ran for the United States Senate and won, becoming the first female Senator from Hawaii and the first Asian-American woman elected to the Senate.

In the Senate, Hirono has been a strong advocate for women's rights, immigration reform, and environmental protection. She has also been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and his policies.
