Margaret Julia Marlo Thomas was born on November 21, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan. She is the oldest offspring of comedian Danny Thomas and his significant other, Rose Marie Cassaniti. Her father was from Lebanon while her mom was from Italy. She has a sister, Terre, and a brother, Tony Thomas.
Marlo’s family moved to California during her developmental years. She went to Marymount High School in Los Angeles and graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree. She was proud of her degree and was glad to carry something home to her folks.

Toward the start of her career, she was in numerous network shows including Bonanza, McHale's Navy, Ben Casey, Arrest and Trial, The Joey Bishop Show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, 77 Sunset Strip, and The Donna Reed Show.
