Margaret Whitehead was a pioneering British epidemiologist and public health researcher. She was born in Liverpool in 1925 and studied medicine at the University of Liverpool. After graduating in 1948, she worked as a general practitioner in the city before moving to London in 1952 to pursue a career in public health.
Early Career
Whitehead began her career in public health as a research assistant at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed as a lecturer in epidemiology in 1956. During this time, she developed an interest in the social determinants of health and began to focus her research on the impact of poverty and inequality on health outcomes.
In 1965, Whitehead was appointed as a senior lecturer in epidemiology at the University of Manchester. Here, she continued her research into the social determinants of health and developed a new approach to public health research. She argued that public health research should focus on the underlying causes of health inequalities, rather than simply treating the symptoms.
Public Health Research
Whitehead's research had a major impact on public health policy in the UK. In the 1970s, she was appointed to the Royal Commission on the National Health Service, where she argued for greater investment in public health research and the development of more effective public health policies.
In the 1980s, Whitehead was appointed as the first director of the Centre for Health Services Research at the University of Manchester. Here, she continued her research into the social determinants of health and developed a new approach to public health research. She argued that public health research should focus on the underlying causes of health inequalities, rather than simply treating the symptoms.
Legacy
Whitehead's research had a major impact on public health policy in the UK. Her work helped to shape the modern public health system and her approach to public health research has been adopted by many countries around the world.
Whitehead was awarded a CBE in 1988 for her services to public health and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1989. She was also awarded honorary degrees from the University of Liverpool and the University of Manchester.
Whitehead died in 2004, but her legacy lives on. Her work has had a lasting impact on public health policy and her approach to public health research continues to be used today.
